Just Kids

Terezi Pyrope met Karkat Vantas in the park. She wasn't sure to make of the tall dark boy in the long sleeve shirt, but she looked at him with her head cocked to the side. She didn't know why she couldn't stop looking at him. She was just a kid, after all.

She saw him more, or rather, noticed him more after that. She liked talking to him. He was the youngest child in a large family of Greek heritage. His father was a priest at a large church, but he was very cruel at home and liked to take out his frustration on his youngest son, sometimes in a physical way.
Terezi liked the way Karkat would try to debate things and then get frustrated at the lack of words. She liked his small amber eyes and his dark skin and the way his hair could never lie flat and was in a perpetual state of fluffy disarray. Terezi liked the way he would wrap his arms around her waist and rest his chin on her head, the way she could just lose herself in his warmth.

Karkat Vantas first saw Terezi in the park, looking at him. He couldn't help but stare back at the small girl with the thick black hair.. He didn't know why he couldn't stop staring. He was just a kid after all.
He saw her more after that. They would sit under a giant oak tree and talk every afternoon. Terezi lived at home with her single mother and had a great interest in the courtroom, planning to follow in her mother's footsteps as a lawyer. She was an avid reader and often found herself lost in fandoms, but had nobody to discuss them with. Most kids around town thought that she was weird...
Except for Karkat Vantas. He liked her and her large blue-green eyes and her infections laugh. He liked her thick soft hair and the way she would lean in to him and sigh deeply when the sunset would break through the leaves under that oak tree and neither of them wanted to go home.
They were just kids after all.

... but kids can't be kids forever.
On a bright summer day, Terezi Pyrope was having her own adventures, wandering in the forest, when she suddenly went missing. After 24 hours her mother contacted the Vantas family, wondering if she was with Karkat, but the harried mother on the other end of the line told her that Karkat had been home all day and that she hadn't seen the girl. Mrs. Pyrope contacted the police.
It was a full week before they caught the kidnapper, Vriska Serket, a psychopathic ransomer who called herself the "thief of light." Terezi was miraculously still alive. The girl was covered in bruises and spend a day in the hospital with a coma before she woke and was released.... but only after she realized a dire truth.
She couldn't see. She was blind.
The following months were hard for both families. Terezi would rarely talk, and when she would, she would simply stutter to Karkat about justice to those who deserve it and then begin to quietly sob. The blind girl couldn't speak about the pain and fear behind her physical and mental bruises.
She was just a kid, after all.
